"A Hidden Heart "
Duo wondered about many things as they rode along, searching for a hut or some other shelter where they might spend the remainder of the night. Not the least of which was whether his husband intended to truly make him his mate. The details of how they'd go about that process were still somewhat vague in his mind, but he couldn't help feeling curious about it. // And what does my Dragon plan to do? // That was one question Duo couldn't ask Wufei. It seemed too bold, too frightening. His curiosity kept nagging at him, but he refused to give in to it. He could only hope Wufei would answer that question without being asked. It began to rain soon after they left the church, and Duo felt thoroughly chilled, despite his cloak and Wufei's shared warmth. Even the fire in his veins at the thought of the Dragon's kisses could not warm him. He'd told him there were all sorts of kisses; Duo hoped that once they got wherever they were going, Wufei would show him. // If we don't fall asleep first. // Duo wrenched his thoughts away from indulgence to more serious concerns. Even now, Milliardo's men might be on their trail. But he didn't really fear that they would catch them. His trust in Wufei was absolute. They'd scarcely rested in two days. He only hoped that exhaustion didn't destroy Wufei's vigilance. He'd do what he could to help him, but Duo knew he hadn't Wufeis skill. He was the Dragon; Duo didn't doubt he could go on for days with little rest, without it affecting him. But he did look tired. Duo sat up with a start when Wufei halted their mount outside a tumbledown hut. It had begun to rain harder, a misery in the cold mountain air. He knew they were fortunate to have found any shelter at all. Wufei tethered the horse beneath a thick stand of firs, then asked Duo for the candle they'd had in the tunnel. He left him waiting under the shelter of the trees while he investigated the hut. He returned almost immediately. "It's little more than four walls and a roof--which leaks--but its better than staying out here. And there's some wood inside. I'll be able to make a fire." The flames lent a cheerful glow to the hut, disguising its dilapidated state. Duo spread a cloth and laid out bread and cheese, and a bottle of mead. They hadn't eaten since midday, and he was starved, Wufei fell to it with a hearty appetite, but despite his hunger, Duo found he couldn't eat much. Curiosity about what Wufei might expect of him made him nervous. Wufei noticed at once that Duo only picked at his food. "Here, try the mead. Sally makes the best mead I've ever tasted. Perhaps it will stir your hunger." Duo drank, savoring the honeyed sweetness and the hint of spice. When he lowered the bottle, he found Wufei watching him, his eyes darker than midnight. Duos heart paused, then pounded furiously, at the longing in the Dragons gaze. He took the mead from him and brought it to his lips, then leaned close and captured Duos mouth with his. His lips skimmed Duos, teasing, taunting him with the barest hint of passion. Groaning, Wufei tossed the drink aside and buried his fingers in Duos disheveled hair. He tasted of honey, a sweetness he shared as Wufei plunged his tongue deep to toy with Duos. He nibbled at Duos lips, then worked his way down his throat, teasing and licking the sensitive places he found along the way. Duo felt fingers at his ribs, tickling him as Wufei struggled with the laces of his tunic. Cursing, he tore at the strings, still kissing Duo all the while. Finally the laces gave, and he tugged at the tunic, pulling it up and over Duos head, leaving him still clad in his undershirt and hose. But the loose garments made Duo feel free, relaxed. Duo wanted to touch Wufeis skin, to smooth his hands over the warmth of his lean, well-muscled body. He tugged without success at his tunic. "Let me," Wufei murmured against Duos throat, gently brushing his hands aside. Rearing back, he pulled his tunic and shirt over his head and tossed them over his shoulder. Wufeis chest was golden in the firelight, tempting Duos fingers to explore. Simply touching him set his blood to simmering in his veins. Duo raked his nails from Wufeis collarbone to his waist, glorying in his reaction. Wufei leaned back on one elbow, breath hissing through his teeth. But he did not stop Duo. He lay there for a time, allowing Duo to learn him as he stroked his darkly tanned skin. But he was hardly a passive participant. He undid Duos braid and swept the long fall of hair over his shoulders, combing his fingers through it as he drew Duo toward him. "Kiss me," Wufei growled, his gaze never leaving Duos as he moved closer. Wufei's mouth on his spread fire over Duos entire body, sending more heat spiraling through him. It was a wonder he hadn't burst into flames. He stroked his hands the length of Duos body and back again, kneading and shaping his flesh until he arched like a cat in his arms. Duo ached to feel the Dragons fingers touch his skin, and Wufei must have sensed it. He found the hem of Duos undershirt which was pooled in his lap and began to inch it upward, dragging his fingertips in a tortuous path along his inner thigh. Duo clamped his legs together, fighting the urge to let them fall open wider, to invite his touch. But Wufei would have none of that. His hand firm on Duos knee, he said, "No, love, let me touch you. Here." Wufei traced the back of his knee, then smoothed his palm along Duos calf until he relaxed, savoring the caress. Wufei eased Duo back onto the cloak, maintaining the soothing, yet exciting, motion of his hand. "I want to kiss you," he whispered. "But you're wearing too many clothes." What did clothes have to do with kissing, Duo wondered, but he helped Wufei remove his undershirt and hose. When he sat up, he ran his hands over Wufeis chest again, reveling in the way his eyes darkened even more. Wufei leaned over Duo and nipped at his neck, sending a shiver of delight down his spine. "You're so lovely," he said, staring into Duos eyes. Moving slowly, Wufei covered Duos aching, hard nipples with his hands. He continued to watch him. The combination of his hands slowly moving over his sensitive flesh and the seduction of Wufeis gaze made Duos body feel heavy, languorous. Wufei could have gotten lost in his eyes, could have drowned in their soothing violet depths. He saw each tiny play of emotion reflected there, Duos reaction to the touch of his hands against the pebbled hardness of his nipples making Wufeis mouth yearn to taste them. Duos flesh was soft and sweet, a delight to his senses in the flickering light. The low moan he made when Wufeis took a rosy tip into his mouth sent a renewed surge of vigor to his already throbbing manhood. With Duos attention focused on what his Dragons mouth was doing, his legs had fallen open, allowing Wufei access to his sweetest flesh that was slowly awakening with the heat of desire. He slipped one hand between Duos silky parted thighs and curled his fingers around warm, velvety skin. Duo arched off the cloak, hands clutching at his lovers back. Sweat beaded on Duos face as Wufei drew his nipple into his mouth, scraping his teeth gently over it as he stroked Duos aching hardness. "Wufei," he moaned. Duo shoved at the waist of Wufeis pants, then tugged on the string until it came untied. Pushing at the loosened fabric, he managed to bare him to the knees. Keeping up the rhythmic caress with hands and mouth, Wufei somehow got the leggings off. His reaction when Duo tentatively stroked his aching flesh wasn't very different from his own. Nataku, Wufei thought, he'd spill his seed into his hands in a moment. // Duo had better be ready for me, I dont know how much longer I can wait. // But Wufei had to be certain that this was what he wanted. Pressing his hand over Duos to halt the mind-stopping caress, he sat back on his heels and moved his hand away. "Duo, lovely, look at me," he commanded softly. Duos eyes drifted open, widening when he swept his gaze over his erect shaft. Duo smiled. The effect on Wufeis body was nearly as strong as if he'd put his hand upon him again. "Do you want me? Do you want to make love with me?" Wufei asked, his voice taut with desire. Still smiling, Duo sat up and touched his fingertip to the end of Wufeis staff. "Yes." He leaned closer, dragging his hair across his thighs, the cool strands a sensuous contrast to his burning flesh. "Yes," he whispered, drawing his fingers over Wufeis chest. When Duo nuzzled his smooth chest and swept the tip of his tongue over a bronze nipple, Wufei could endure the torment no longer. Pulling Duo beneath him, Wufei set about making him his. Duo welcomed him with an enthusiasm that surprised Wufei, given his inexperience. Duos gaze never left his as Wufei moved between his legs and settled into the cradle of his body, allowing Duo to adjust to his weight atop him. "Don't make me wait, Dragon," he whispered as he pulled Wufei closer. "Sometimes its better to wait," he said teasingly. "I'm not through kissing you yet." He closed Duos mouth with his, the rhythm he set as he thrust his tongue into his mouth echoing that of his body rubbing against his mates. Duos fingernails scraped along Wufeis ribs, digging in when he tore his mouth free and began kissing and licking his way down Duos body. Duo watched Wufei curiously as he reached over and dug around in one of the packs. He soon produced a stone jar, when Wufei removed the lid the air was filled with the scent of lavender and lilies. Scooping a generous amount of the scented grease onto his fingers, Wufei carefully parted the crease of Duos bottom. Duos eyes widened in shock when he felt his Dragon push one of his slim fingers into his body, but he was writhing wildly in Wufeis arms in no time, his voice a keening wail as he called out his name. Wufei slipped into Duo as his body began to spasm with satisfaction, easing his way into his tight grasp. Duo wrapped his legs about Wufeis hips and held him tightly, his anchor in the swirl of passion they'd begun, swiftly matching his rhythm, until they both plunged into the throes of completion. Duo lay pressed beneath Wufei's weight, unable--and unwilling--to move. He'd never felt so tired or exhilarated in his life. He burrowed his face in Wufeis neck and smiled. "I must be crushing you," Wufei muttered, his voice sounding as weak as Duo felt. He levered himself up and settled alongside him, wrapping his arm about Duos waist and cuddling close. Now I know, Duo thought. His ignorance didn't matter after all; if anyone had tried to describe lovemaking to him, he never would have imagined this. And there was so much more to it than the physical actions, he realized. The sense of closeness with Wufei, the yearning to be one with him--those feelings were as amazing as the explosion of sensation that still echoed through his body. Eventually the sensations subsided. Duo stared past Wufei's shoulder into the dying flames, tired, but not yet ready to sleep. "Is this what the priest and that girl were doing?" he asked. Duo could feel a blush sweep over him at the thought. Wufei laughed. "Most likely. I told you before what he's like, the lecherous old bastard. He's certainly not much of a priest, though he served us well. But the last I knew, priests were not supposed to partake of the sort of activities we just indulged in." He turned Duo to face him and kissed his lips softly, slowly. "Enough about him. Marrying us was assuredly the best deed he's performed in a very long time. Now we're wed, we're free to indulge as often as we like. If it pleases you," he added. Taking his hand in his, he nibbled at Duos fingertips, renewing the echoes of passion lingering in his body. "Did you like what we did?" he asked, his gaze assessing. // What a stupid question! // "If I liked it any better, I would probably be lying here unconscious," Duo told him. "Its no wonder the Church tells us its a sin. Once indulged, I think this appetite must become stronger, never to be satisfied." "Hungry again?" Wufei asked, his lips quirked upward in a devilish smile. "If you're not, what tidbit might I give you to whet your appetite, milord?" Duo ran his glance over Wufei from head to toe, taking his time and enjoying every detail of the journey. It appeared that even his eyes' caress had an effect upon the Dragon, bringing his manhood erect and making the pulse in his neck throb faster. It was a powerful feeling, to know he could cause such a reaction without even laying a hand upon him. It made Duo wonder what he would do when he finally did touch him. Smiling, he decided to find out. Fingers digging into the smooth skin of his chest, Duo pushed Wufei back on the cloak they used as a blanket. The Dragon folded his arms behind his head and smiled. "Do with me whatever you wish," he told him. "Our bodies hold a wealth of pleasures. Explore them with me. I promise I won't mind." His eyes hinted at delights Duo had yet to experience. His face and body dared Duo, tempted Duo, to partake of those delights with him. Uncertain where to start, Duo placed his open hands upon the corded muscles of Wufeis chest and kneaded the hard planes of his stomach with gentle strokes. He covered his face with kisses, enjoying the sound of Wufeis indrawn breath whenever he did something he liked. And it seemed to Duo that he liked practically everything he did. Wufei lay there and allowed Duo to explore his body, satisfying his curiosity--and increasing his own desire. Finally Wufeis hands snaked out from beneath his head and, grabbing Duo about the waist, he settled him onto his lap. "Take me now, Duo," he groaned. Curious about this new position--and aching for his possession--Duo sank down upon Wufeis shaft, delighting in the fact that he was in control. Now was Duos chance to make the Dragon squirm. But the sensations were too intense to endure for long. Much too quickly, it seemed, pleasure overtook him, and any sense of control disappeared. Moaning, Duo slumped over Wufei as he, too, surrendered to passion. Duo fell asleep still on top of him, and awoke to find Wufei stating up at him. A faint trace of sunlight crept beneath the flimsy door. "Good morning, spouse," he whispered, drawing Duo down for a kiss. Wufei held his attention quite thoroughly with his lips, and Duo felt himself start to drift into the fog of passion he'd inhabited the night before. But they didn't have the time to indulge themselves now. "Shouldn't we be going?" Duo asked when they paused for breath. "Regrettably, yes," Wufei said with a sigh. Duo tried to roll off him and discovered that he could scarcely move. Wufei assisted him in sitting up. Duo realized he was sore in many places. He hadn't hurt when the Dragon made him his, but he hurt now. Sitting atop the horse today would be painful, he could tell that already. Still, Duo smiled. Last night had been worth every twinge. "Are you all right, lovely?" Wufei asked, scooping Duo into his arms and setting him on his feet. "Just give me a little time to move about and I'll be fine," he told him as he clung to his arm. Wufei watched Duo closely when he stepped away from him and bent to pick up his undershirt. "I apologize," he said. "Here, sit. I'll get everything ready to go." Wufei knelt down beside Duo. "I shouldn't have been greedy," he said. "I didn't realize how sore you'd be." "I'll be fine, Wufei, once I get moving. We cannot stay here," Duo pointed out. "If the men who came to Ashby were truly looking for us, we need to get to Maxwell Abby soon." "I know." Although his voice seemed calm, normal, Duo could see concern in his eyes, and his face was set in stern lines. Wufei helped Duo dress, then offered him food and mead. Duo accepted the food eagerly, for he was hungry after their exertions of the previous night. Once Wufei had smothered the dying fire, they went on their way. Wufei tried to make it easier for Duo, but even though he sat pillion before him, cushioned on a folded shirt, every jolt of the horse brought a new twinge of discomfort. Finally, in an effort to distract him, Wufei began to recite poems in a low voice. Most of the poems were lewd, probably worse than they sounded. Duo didn't understand half of the words. Many of the things he did understand sounded physically impossible. He asked Wufei to explain some of the poems, and he soon had him doubled up with laughter. "You're joking, aren't you?" he asked after Wufei told him what one poem meant. "People don't really do those things--" he gazed up at him through his lashes "---do they?" "Certainly they do," Wufei said, eyes twinkling in return. "Would you like to try--" "No!" Duo poked him in the ribs. "You aren't serious, are you?" Wufei loved how huge Duos eyes became when he couldn't decide if he was joking. He knew so little of the world; Wufei could see that some of the poems shocked him, though they weren't shocking at all. Many were soldiers' ditties, true, but others were recited in noble households. Wufei wondered yet again if he'd done Duo a grave disservice by wedding him so soon after he emerged from the church. What if he came to regret marrying him after Duo became more accustomed to everyday life? What of his duties for Milliardo? Assuming the prince would allow him back into favor, Wufei knew he might have to do things that would disgust Duo. How would he bear it if he turned away? Already he couldn't stand the thought of leaving Duo. If their lives ever returned to normal, he'd have to leave him on occasion, whether on the prince's business or on his own. Simply thinking of it made Wufei ache with loneliness--he who had never minded being alone. And what would he do if the prince refused to allow him back into his service? That Milliardo would be angry over this, Wufei had no doubt. Clearly, he'd intended Duo's existence to remain a secret until he had need of the boy. It was no use thinking of it yet again. Wufei would only grow angry himself--again. He'd be better served to make certain that he and Duo arrived at Maxwell Abby as soon as possible. Hilde's keep was located more toward the English side of the marches---hence its strategic importance to Milliardo. They'd be safer there, while they decided what to do next. Wufei scanned their surroundings. When they left the hut this morn, the sun had been out, although there had been numerous patches of fog to obscure the way. But the sun had disappeared by noon, leaving the day shrouded in gloom. He had the feeling that it would start to rain again soon, and he knew of no place in this area convenient for shelter. Although Duo hadn't complained, he had to be damnably uncomfortable. But he kept it hidden, laughing at his stories, asking him about his sister and Treize, making the time pass quickly for both of them. Duo carried such joy within him, and he was unstinting about sharing it with Wufei. He'd remember their first night together for the rest of his life. Duo had given him a gift, a feeling he'd never before shared. In the past, lovemaking had been an urge to be satisfied, like hunger or thirst. But sharing passion with Duo had been different from anything he'd felt before. Already he yearned for more. They crested a steep hill and stopped to rest the horse before venturing down the narrow path on the other side. He dismounted and turned to help Duo from the saddle. Suddenly his welcoming smile changed to an expression of horror. "Wufei!" he screamed. Wufei jerked his sword free as he whirled and they fell upon him. Four men, well armed with swords and daggers--and the element of surprise, Wufei kicked and slashed, dodging many, but not all, of their blows. Rocks clattered down the slope, striking one of the men a stunning blow. So now there were three. Suddenly hooves thundered down the path and into their midst. His horse leaped into the thick of the fight, feet flying. The stallion kicked out, scattering the men straight into a hail of stones. Duo knelt above them, shrieking abuse as he pitched rock after rock down the slope. Most of them missed their targets, but he kept at it. Wufei took the opportunity afforded by Duos harassment to continue his attack. Between the rocks, the horse and his sword, eventually the band of attackers were subdued. The last man surrendered with a whimper, once he saw that he faced the Dragon alone. "There's rope in the saddlebag," he called to Duo after he calmed the stallion and discovered that the packs had fallen off the saddle, halfway down the hillside. "Can you find it?" Duo scrambled about on the loose rocks, then flopped onto the grassy verge to dig through the bag. He tossed the rope down to him, and Wufei jerked out of the way just in time. All four men had injuries, but none appeared life-threatening. He trussed them up and left them sitting alongside the path. Their weapons he pitched over a nearby cliff. "Who sent you?" "It was Milliardo, milord. Said as how you'd gone missing, along with something he values greatly. Offered us a reward if we brought you back to him. Said you're an outlaw now." // By Nataku! // Wufei hadn't thought it would come to this. He'd underestimated his overlord greatly, it seemed. They had to get moving. Now. There was no telling how many others Milliardo had sent after them. "Someone will travel this track eventually," he told them, his voice as cold as ice. "You'll survive till then, I imagine." Wufei whistled the horse over and checked the saddle. "If some animal doesn't get to you first" He lifted Duo onto the saddle carefully, but still he couldn't miss the fleeting look of pain in his eyes. Swinging up behind him, Wufei scanned the sky. Heavy black clouds scudded across the heavens, and lightning flashed and thundered in the distance. He spurred the horse on, hoping to reach lower land before the storm reached them. These hills were dangerous under the best of conditions, and in a storm they could be deadly. Duo clung to the saddle as the stallion slid down the rock-strewn hillside. Sensing the oncoming storm, the animal rolled his eyes wildly. Wufei had his hands full keeping the beast from bolting when thunder boomed nearby. The rising wind was strong, blowing sticks, leaves and dirt into their faces and making it difficult to see. "We've got to find a place to wait this out!" he shouted to Duo. He nodded and huddled deeper in Wufeis arms. They reached the small valley at the bottom of the mountain just as the clouds opened up and sent a torrent pouring over them. It had gotten so dark, especially down here in the glen, that Wufei could scarcely see ten feet before them. The stallion plodded on, head hanging low as he forged through the wind. Wufei wrapped himself about Duo, protecting him as best he could. He didn't know how long they traveled thus, plunging into the darkness for want of a place to shelter. It had obviously been too long, for he could have sworn he heard snatches of song in between the near-constant rumbling of thunder. Flickering light shone up ahead, and Wufei headed for it. Before long, he realized they were moving toward the mouth of a cave. A fire burned merrily under the overhang, flaring up when the wind gusted, Wufei halted the horse and slipped from the saddle, then pulled Duo into his arms. A figure walked toward them from inside the cave, a dark shape silhouetted against the fire. Wufei couldn't distinguish more, but friend or foe, they were going into the cave. The man stepped out into the light. Duo gasped and clutched Wufei's shoulders tightly. Wufei started to laugh when he saw the man's face. It was Heero Yuy.
